Bio-Impedance Analysis

Bio-impedance analysis, also called a Bio-markers test, is a test I offer in my office. The test is perfect for anyone wanting more in-depth analysis of their body and health. Bio-markers testing is given to all new clients, where appropriate, at their first New Client Intake Session. Bio-markers testing is very informative, and may give you some insight into what is currently working or not working in your nutrition and/or fitness plan. I use Bio-markers test results to help my clients set realistic and attainable goals for improving their health.

How does the test work?

I use a portable machine that does the Bio-impedance analysis test, called the RJL Quantum IV. The whole test takes only a few minutes. Results and analysis takes about another 20 minutes. Please plan for this appointment to take 30 minutes.

When you come in to take the test, I will ask you to take off your right shoe and sock. There is nothing invasive about the test and you won’t feel anything. There’s a massage table in my office and you will lay down on it for the test. Relaxing and getting comfortable is part of the test so as I talk you through how the test works, I may ask you to take a few deep breaths. I will then attach a sticker to your foot, ankle, wrist and forearm.

The test conducts a small electric current, and you will not feel anything during the test. During the test, the electrical current utilizes your body’s hydration status (water) as a medium for gathering information. After a minute or so, the my computer prints out the report.

During your Bio-markers test appointment, I will interpret your results for you and we will discuss values which may include:

  • Body fat percentage measures what percent of your total body weight is made up of fat. I will discuss with you what your results mean and how together we can come up with a nutrition plan to help you maintain or achieve your unique optimal body composition for health.
  • Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the amount of energy your body needs daily at rest. Where appropriate, I will often make calorie intake recommendations based on this value as well as your overall activity level including exercise. Many people do not know how much they are currently eating, or what the optimal calorie intake range for their body should be.
  • Intra-cellular water addresses your hydration level. All good health starts with proper hydration. I will explain the implications of dehydration and how to increase this level – sometimes it takes more than just drinking lots of water, but that is important too!

Unless you are pregnant, please prepare for your Bio-markers test by adhering to the following guidelines:

  • Do not eat for 4 hours prior to testing.
  • Do not exercise for 12 hours prior to testing.
  • Do not consume alcohol for 24 hours prior to testing.
  • Drink your usual amount of water the night before and the day of your appointment.
  • Do not drink caffeine the day of your test.
  • Ensure access to your right foot with removable footwear (no pantyhose).

"I just wanted to thank you for the experience so far. I left your office feeling so motivated and excited for this journey! It means so much that you've truly listened to my concerns and goals and worked with me. I feel like this is a wonderful fit and I'm very pleased so far. Looking forward to our next consult."
